If you were standing before God, could you describe your relationship to Him by saying, “I love you with all my heart and all my soul and all my mind and all my strength”?
told the Israelites that the obedience means nothing without relationship. That it is in the context of the relationship with God that the obedience makes sense.
This is the last discussion and opportunity that Jesus has with his disciples before he would be crucified. So he tells them, “If you love me, keep my commands.” They didn’t even know yet how that would apply. I am sure they were racking their brains to remember everything Jesus said in their time together. But this isn’t what Jesus meant. Jesus knew that the Holy Spirit would be given to them and it was the obedience to the Holy Spirit and its direction that Jesus is referring to.
Jesus directs them to the truth that if we do not follow the direction of Jesus, it isn’t an obedience problem. It is a love problem. Satan has one desire as he works in the world around us. The symptoms of this one goal of Satan can be witnessed in the evil we see around us. But his one goal is to keep people from seeing and loving Jesus. So we are first love Jesus, and then allow that love to work in our life.
The leaders asked Jesus what is the greatest commandment. While they were hoping to catch Jesus in some sort of trap, Jesus responded, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” He then gave them a second command to love your neighbor as you love yourself. This again reflects and this results in the leaders not daring to ask any further questions. Jesus tells us that the kingdom of God is close. Not something to be earned or worked towards, but available when we love God with our all.
There is no secret knowledge, but available to us. Joshua, Elijah, Jesus and many others describe how God the Father is close. Many times the Bible gives examples, and sometimes direction as from Jesus in , for us to find time to be alone with God. One of the most important conversation to have with The Father is to say, “I love you.”
58:1 “Cry aloud; do not hold back;
lift up your voice like a trumpet;
declare to my people their transgression,
to the house of Jacob their sins.
2 Yet they seek me daily
and delight to know my ways,
as if they were a nation that did righteousness
and did not forsake the judgment of their God;
they ask of me righteous judgments;
they delight to draw near to God.
3 ‘Why have we fasted, and you see it not?
Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?’
Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure,
and oppress all your workers.
4 Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight
and to hit with a wicked fist.
Fasting like yours this day
will not make your voice to be heard on high.
5 Is such the fast that I choose,
a day for a person to humble himself?
Is it to bow down his head like a reed,
and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him?
Will you call this a fast,
and a day acceptable to the Lord?
6 “Is not this the fast that I choose:
to loose the bonds of wickedness,
to undo the straps of the yoke,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to break every yoke?
7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry
and bring the homeless poor into your house;
when you see the naked, to cover him,
and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?
8 Then shall your light break forth like the dawn,
and your healing shall spring up speedily;
your righteousness shall go before you;
the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.
9 Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer;
you shall cry, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’
If you take away the yoke from your midst,
the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness,
10 if you pour yourself out for the hungry
and satisfy the desire of the afflicted,
then shall your light rise in the darkness
and your gloom be as the noonday.
11 And the Lord will guide you continually
and satisfy your desire in scorched places
and make your bones strong;
and you shall be like a watered garden,
like a spring of water,
whose waters do not fail.
12 And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt;
you shall raise up the foundations of many generations;
you shall be called the repairer of the breach,
the restorer of streets to dwell in.
13 “If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath,
from doing your pleasure on my holy day,
and call the Sabbath a delight
and the holy day of the Lord honorable;
if you honor it, not going your own ways,
or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly;
14 then you shall take delight in the Lord,
and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth;
I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father,
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” (ESV)

21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me. (ESV)

6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (ESV)
